Meatballs With Roasted Tomatoes And Spinach

The word is out! The ketogenic diet is one of the most effective weight loss plans trending right now. In case you lost track at Atkins, (low carb is so nineties) the keto diet is a low carb, high-fat diet with benefits, (health benefits that is) such as combatting chronic diseases and reducing inflammation.  In fact, you don’t even need to exercise to lose weight on the keto. You’ll shed pounds with the caloric reduction alone.

But don’t think you can get off that easy. Maintaining the diet is tough. For most, it means eliminating about half the foods in their current diets, sugar and grains included. Hey, if I (the woman who flew to Hanoi just to eat) can do it, you can do it. Here are seven simple tips to make your keto diet easier and keep you from falling off the wagon:

Meal Prep

Being prepared is the key to success. Planning meals ahead of time not only gives you a list of ingredients to shop for, but it also keeps you from wandering around the grocery store and finding the latest flavor of Oreos.

Check out these recipes on Pinterest to give you some inspiration and click here for a printable version of the keto diet shopping list,  Planning not your strong suit? There are plenty of meal plans online that will do all the planning for you. One of my faves is this 14-day keto diet meal plan.

Beat Carb Cravings

It’s common to crave carbs at some point, especially in the first week of the diet. Fortunately, you can replace rice and pasta with cauliflower rice or veggie pasta. You will be surprised how good they are! You can make your own cauliflower rice or buy it premade. For your veggie pasta, try Zucchini noodles with avocado pesto; you’ll never go back to grains again!

Beat Sugar Cravings

Sugar cravings can be intense during the first week of the diet. Sugar is in everything, especially processed foods. Most of us have sugar addictions that we don’t even know about until we start going through withdrawal symptoms. To curb a sweet tooth, stay away from temptations and replace sugar laden deserts with keto-friendly recipes. Certain supplements (chromium picolinate, L-carnitine, omega oils and green tea extract) are great for keeping sugar cravings at bay and healthy too!

Pack Lunches

Packing a lunch box full of keto-friendly goodies for a day away from home helps you make sure you’re staying on track and saves money to boot. Here are a few yummy keto lunches that are easy to pack and take with you.

Stay Positive. Be Active

The power of positivity! Staying positive is crucial for getting through the times when you feel like caving to cravings. When it comes to triggers that make you want to eat, depression is a big one. Having enough sleep and exercising will help reduce stress and keep your outlook sunny.

Clean House

You can’t eat it if it’s not in the house. Plan for the worst by throwing all keto unfriendly foods away. Stock your kitchen with loads of fresh veggies and protein. Bye, bye junk food!

Connect with Other Keto Dieters

There are so many Keto diet discussion groups online. Reach out to others who are in the same boat as you and share recipes, challenges, and successes.  Social support will help you stay on the diet and get the results you want.
