There’s nowhere on earth like the Big Apple! When I was in my 20’s, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of living there and becoming an artist and (like all struggling artists in New York), I was broke. However, as they say, “If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere.” Here are 5 of the best ways to enjoy NYC on a budget.
Hotels are a huge expense. Fortunately, you can rent a flat through Airbnb for half the price of a hotel. Another way to pinch pennies is to stay in Brooklyn. Neighborhoods like Fort Greene and Williamsburg are just a subway ride away from Manhattan and are hip and authentic places with a culture of their own.
You don’t have to dine at expensive restaurants to experience New York cuisine. Tasty meals that won’t break the bank include: buying a slice of infamous New York pizza (I promise you this is the absolute best slice in the city, well worth a trip to Brooklyn!) ordering a corn beef sandwich at a Jewish deli like Katz’s Del or hitting Indian Row in the East Village (BYOW). Happy hour is also a great option for affordable drink specials and food.
Broadway Shows At A Discount
Seeing a Broadway show is on the top of the to-do list when visiting New York. Before booking your tickets (they can be quite expensive) look for deals on Viator. Also, consider taking in some off- broadway or improv shoes with amateur actors. They can be very thought-provoking and cost a fraction of the price of a Broadway Theater Ticket.
Ride The Subway
You can pretend like you’re a real New Yorker and save money too! Buy an MTA card and be sure to get a preview of the subway map before your trip. New Yorkers take great pride in their knowledge of the city, so don’t hesitate to ask if you get lost or have questions.

Spend Time Outdoors
The best way to see the city is to spend time outdoors, whether it be walking through the neighborhoods or sitting outdoors at a cafe. Take a stroll through Central Park or view the architecture of Soho and Greenwich Village. One of my favorite things to do is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to get a view of the spectacular skyline.
